Washing hands with soap is one of the simplest and most effective ways of killing any infection and viruses you may have come into contact with, according to health experts.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), Soap is one of the most effective ways to get rid of COVID-19 because it dissolves the fatty layer that coats coronaviruses but requires washing the hands properly.

Regardless of good personal hygiene being the gentle weapon that kills severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), WHO says thousands of people die every day around the world from infections resulting from poor hygiene. Keeping hands clean is one of the most important steps we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others.

Many diseases and conditions are spread by not washing hands with soap and clean, running water, according to Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

However, health experts in Rwanda say if the population manages to adapt and continue to regularly wash hands with soap or sanitizers, it will not only protect them from spreading or contracting the COVID-19 but also other infectious diseases.

Steven Rulisa a Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology, lecturer and former Dean of the School of Medicine and Pharmacy at the University of Rwanda (UR), said people typically think of soap as gentle and calm, but from the perspective of microorganisms, it is often extremely destructive.

He says cleaning our hands regularly and maintaining hygiene by using especially ordinary soap would avoid the transmission of harmful germs and prevent the entire population from associated infections.

“A drop of ordinary soap diluted in water is sufficient to rupture and kill many types of bacteria and viruses, including the new coronavirus that is currently circling the globe, said Prof. Rulisa. Wash hands with soap even post covid-19
