Heavy trucks can now use Kigali-Gatuna highway following completion of emergency repair works on the route cut off by rains last week.

Only light vehicles and passenger buses had been allowed to continue using the one remaining lane while all heavy vehicles were re-routed to Kagitumba and Cyanika borders.

The Ministry of Infrastructure on Friday announced that works to find temporary bypass that had been going on had been completed and traffic flow was allowed for all vehicles.

“Traffic has now resumed for all vehicles. Works for emergency repairs have been completed,” State Minister for transport Jean de Dieu Uwihanganye said, adding that permanent repair would continue.

Police on Friday announced that they had deployed to the site to facilitate traffic flow as more road construction works are underway.

The disruption affected nearly 200 trucks that use the road daily as diversion forced them to incur extra expenses.
