At least 65 people are confirmed dead, and hundreds others displaced following overnight heavy rains that triggered landslides and floods in parts of Rwanda, the Emergency Management Ministry (MINEMA) said.

The rains also caused devastating damages to infrastructure across the six worst hit districts namely Nyabihu, Gakenke, Muhanga, Musanze, Ruhango, and Rubavu.

“Emergency response continues especially provision of support to help families bury their loved ones, and taking injuries to the hospital. There is also evacuation of families from risk areas to safety,” ministry announced mid-day Thursday.

MINEMA also said assessment was still ongoing to establish the full extent of damages, and facilitate response and repair activities.

The ministry reports show that similar rains that hit between 1st to 2nd May killed more than eight people while five others were injured.  Data from a previous assessment also show that rains claimed  47 lives, and 76 injuries between April 1 and 26..
