The African Union has suspended Sudan’s membership from the bloc in a bid to intensify pressure on Khartoum’s military rulers to hand power to civilians.

After a meeting on Thursday, the AU’s Peace and Security Council said Sudan will no longer be allowed into AU sponsored meetings until the situation normalises.

“The AU Peace and Security Council has with immediate effect suspended the participation of the Republic of Sudan in all AU activities,” the Council tweeted on Thursday.

The AU said the suspension will be in place “until the effective establishment of a Civilian-led Transitional Authority, as the only way to allow the Sudan to exit from the current crisis.”
